The scruffy little tom-cat brings the poor miller’s son riches and happiness. Dressed up with hat and sword and boots, he goes out into the world, freshens up the old king and his courtiers, has any amount of adventures and finally even defeats the wicked monster in his castle.

With much wit and gusto Svenja Tiedt, with the choreographer Amelie Jalowy in the sets of Tatjana Ivschina, stages the magic fairy-tale opera written in 1947 by Xavier Montsalvatge (1912–2002). With a wealth of musical allusions and a combination of traditional harmony and dissonant tones his humorous score characterizes the familiar tale’s preposterous figures, who soon find their way into the hearts of all the public. Part of it all are just as much the cheeky hip-hop rabbits the cat chases as also the almost deaf and doddery king and the enchanting princess.

“Fresh and saucy like this, a children’s opera can be enjoyed by adults too”
Anne Horstmeier, WAZ

“There is surely nobody who leaves the theatre afterwards without at least a pleased smile”
Ingo Hoddick, Rheinische Post
