A young woman is kept behind locked doors by her guardian, for the venerable doctor, despite their great difference in age, has designs on her and more still on her dowry. But the word gets round beyond bars and bolts and awakens in the young Count Almaviva curiosity and the determination to conquer the unknown beauty. He does not get far with his sweet serenades; more success is promised by quips and cranks and wanton wiles of the resourceful barber Figaro. In no time heads and hearts and much besides have plenty of scapes and scrapes to keep them occupied.

The music of Rossini (1792-1868) exudes the perfume of flowers and fuddles the senses when Claus Guth sets the figures of the comedy buzzing, for all the world like enamoured insects jostling for nectar. With high-carat musical instinct his staging, already joyously received in Basel, Munich and Leipzig, distils out of Rossini’s score hyperactive antics which make blundering bumbles, merry moths and eager ephemera seem stunningly human in their craving for Cupid’s conquests.

“The star of the evening bursts in on the mild world as a shining black scandal-seeking locust, briefcase packed with barber’s kit, the wildest ideas under his Elvis hairstyling, for instance how to outwit the fat spider Bartolo, the besotted guardian of butterfly girl Rosina – a bug’s life in full swing.”
