Act One
Pretty Rosina is kept behind locked doors by her guardian, old Dr. Bartolo, together with her considerable dowry, which is what the good doctor has his eye on. But despite lock and key Count Almaviva hears about Rosina and both curiosity and desire are aroused in him. His attempt to serenade the object of his love in the guise of the poor student Lindoro has little success. But then he makes the acquaintance of Figaro, the effervescent barber, who is well known as a master of intrigues and stratagems. For a consideration Figaro offers Almaviva his advice. He is to disguise himself as a soldier and present a requisition order authorizing him to take up quarters in Bartolo’s house. Meanwhile Figaro visits Rosina, intending to speak to her on behalf of Almaviva. Rosina has already long since taken note of her young admirer Lindoro, and when Figaro asks her to write a billet-doux for her suitor, she turns out to have already written it. After all, there is no time to lose, since Bartolo is already in a hurry to marry Rosina himself and has been hatching a plot together with his shady music-teacher friend Don Basilio to out-manœuvre his rival Almaviva. The Count duly appears as planned in the guise of a drunken soldier and the police are called in. The Count says a word in confidence to the police officer and to the surprise of the others is not arrested.

Act Two
The Count smuggles himself into Bartolo’s house again, this time pretending that Don Basilio is ill and that he has come to give Rosina her music-lesson in his place. In fact he intends to rope Rosina into a plan to abduct her. Figaro distracts the Doctor’s attention to give the lovers a chance to get to know each other better. At the same time he succeeds in snitching the key to Rosina’s balcony. It all looks like working out, until a perfectly healthy Don Basilio unexpectedly turns up. He is disposed of with difficulty and a bribe. But Bartolo has become suspicious. He urges Rosina to marry him without further delay, and makes out that this fellow Lindoro is only playing with her feelings in order to win her for Count Almaviva. Rosina falls for this story and agrees to marry Bartolo, who wastes no time in sending for a notary. When Figaro comes with the Count, Rosina refuses to let herself be abducted, and only when Lindoro is able to persuade her that he and Count Almaviva are one and the same and that his intentions are honourable does she yield to her young happiness.
