Così fan tutte
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
|
Duration: about 3 ¾ hours, one interval
Ferrando und Guglielmo bet with Don Alfonso on the unshakeable faithfulness of their brides Dorabella und Fiordiligi. The rules of the game are easily found: the young men pretend to have been called to war, return in disguise and each presses his suit with the other’s bride – and suddenly the world is turned upside-down…
With their third collaboration, “Così fan tutte”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and Lorenzo da Ponte (1749–1838) made the operatic stage the scene of a timeless conflict between requited love and the conventions of society. With fine humour they unravel the great themes of love, fidelity and seductibility. The lively surface however shows signs of wear and tear. “Così fan tutte” is an experimental attempt at psychological conspectus, a study of latent expectations and open disappointments, cynicism and embitterment, in the course of which those involved fall into such maelstroms of emotional complications that by the end one wonders whether they are sure they wanted that much to know all about it. Only in masquerade and at the moment of betrayal do the couples realize the dimensions of their own feelings. The game reveals to the lovers the truth about themselves and forces them to take a look at the dark and unpredictable sides of their souls.
Deutsche Oper am Rhein was able to engage with Nicolas Brieger one of the most renowned of directors. Born in Berlin, Brieger is equally attached to plays and to opera and waas dramatic director of the Mannheim National Theatre from 1988 to 1992. His career took him to many important stages: from Berlin, Basel, Bochum, Bremen, Brussels, Essen, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt to Geneva, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, Paris, San Francisco, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zürich. From Euripides to Thomas Bernhard, including numerous world premières, he stages the dramas of the great authors of world literature. He feels affection for works of the 20th century by Korngold, Strauss, Janáček, Messiaen, Henze and Rihm just as much as for the output of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
