They take life just as it comes: Rodolfo the poet, Marcello the painter, Schaunard the musician, Colline the philosopher and the other “Bohemians” living in Paris and dreaming of triumphs. And then there is the incurably ill Mimì, the little seamstress who fires and breaks Rodolfo’s heart. The make the opera “La Bohème” by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) into one great party with an unexpectedly tragic ending, confronting the young and carefree rollickers with the bitter experience of poverty, sickness and distress.
It is the power of emotion which Puccini drains to the lees, without allowing his figures to degenerate into cheap clichés. They represent a new generation believing confidently in the future and discovering in anguish that happiness is only a short-time guest. Robert Carsen’s production, which has already been shown on a number of European stages, brings out their youthfulness.
